As Jesus and Santa battle it out for their annual beard monopoly, as the men occupying Wall Street let their facial hair grow long for warmth and political change, as we enter the cold dark tunnel of New England winter, artists from all over the country unite to bring you a show about... beards. Emulsion Apparel and the Aviary Gallery teamed up with artist Fionn McCabe to organize a showing of more than 25 artists.

Reception from 6pm to 9pm on December first at the Aviary Gallery in Jamaica Plain.

The show will be up from the 1st to the 29th.

living a lie. Today’s success stories feature artists from many mediums
coming together to create projects impossible to conceive on their own.
These collections of collectives around the world team up and tackle large
scale public works of art, museum exhibitions, murals and much more.

Contemporary artists ranging from Friends With You to Jeff Koons to The Yarn
Bombers to Banksy and beyond all work in concert with their teams of
specialists to realize amazing projects. Nobody is going at it alone anymore
especially in the Hub of the Universe, the city with the Dirty Water, The
Capitol of the Commonwealth, the fair city of Boston Massachusetts.

Boston is the proud home of a collection of collectives creating an exciting
body of work. Each of these crews hop over the traditional paths of gallery

My submission for Chain Letter

I’ve been asked to be in a group show this summer called Chain Letter. As per the concept of this show, I am supposed to invite 10 artists who I admire to also participate. You are one of my 10. I am inviting you to be a part of Chain Letter because I admire you.

I gotta say, I love the concept of this show. The Boston event was held at Samson Projects @ 450 Harrison Ave. http://www.samsonprojects.com/

"Chain Letter" is a global group show wherein 10 artists have been invited to participate. Those 10 then invite 10 artists that they admire. Those 10 invite 10 more and so on. This cycle continues for 30 days.

The result is an exponentially massive, artist-curated group show based entirely on admiration. We hope every admired artist on the planet will be included in "Chain Letter" this summer.

Yes! I am quite excited to be participating in the 100 days project this year! I will be splitting my summer between Vermont and Massachusetts so, as of now, I am thinking a drawing a day is a good way to go. Here is the bit about my background:I received a BFA from Alfred University School of Art and Design ('98), and a MFA from The School Of The Museum Of Fine Arts and Tufts University('05) I have taught at the the MFA Boston, SMFA, the Essex Art Center and the Brookline Art Center. The "Salon Series" or "Curl Up and Dye" continues in the tradition of the “memento mori,” while specifically relating to living and dying in America. These graphic paintings mimic a style of beauty shop signage popularized in the 1980's. This series was inspired in part by my fascination with Victorian hairwork wreaths, mementos made entirely of knotted human hair. Hair has so much baggage not to mention biblical power, glam power and visceral power. Before photographs, lovers traded locks of hair as intimate keepsakes. Today the global hair trade is huge. It must be hair's transient connection to the body that begs comparison to our own profound mortality. Each piece in this series is inspired by an actual beauty parlor whose name honors the duality of life and death.

We arachnid, we resourceful.
For months now I've had hair on the brain... it's alive, its dead it lasts forever, but it falls out. Hair is part of a person, but it isn't. It's renewable...sometimes.
Thinking about this wreath @ the Peabody Historical Society, Peabody , MA. Horseshoe shaped and from across the room this appears to be just dried flowers. It was made in 1857, is a stunning example of "fancywork." "Fancywork " or "hair work" was typically created by women and utilized their own hair or that of a loved one. (Often locks of hair were traded between lovers as a precursor to the photograph.) Also given as mementos. In this case, each flower in this piece represents an individual from the artist's church congregation. The hair is tightly wound and neatly configured into flowers and butterflies. Both beautiful and temporary...
